When we launched Wellness Bakeries more than ten years ago, we began with just one product – Chocolate Bliss Cake. Our goal
was to create the best tasting, healthiest chocolate cake ever baked.
That meant that it had to not only be grain and gluten free… but very low in sugar too.
And while this was long before the “keto lifestyle” became one of the most popular health trends, Chocolate Bliss Cake (with Frosting!) has always met the ketogenic
macronutrient ratios.
Over the years, we have tested dozens of ways to “personalize” the flavor of Chocolate Bliss Cake (while adding even more nutritional benefits).
Today, we share 10 of our favorite “hacks”
and secret superfood add-ins to create a chocolate dessert experience that is out of this world… while stoking your metabolism, boosting your nutrition and keeping you feeling full for hours!
So without further ado here they are…
(1) Cream Cheese: The “Whey” to a Dense & Fudgy Cake
The original preparation for Chocolate Bliss Cake called for cream cheese. And there was also whey protein in the mix. These two ingredients made the cake incredibly rich and fudgy.
Because so many people are sensitive to dairy or wish to avoid it for various reasons, we eliminated dairy products from all of our mixes. But you can always add cream cheese and whey, to increase the richness, density (and protein content) of Chocolate Bliss Cake.
How To: Add 2 ounces of room-temperature organic cream cheese to the wet
ingredients in our Chocolate Bliss Cake preparation and then bake as usual. (We’ll cover whey in just a moment).
Bonus: The cake gets even fudgier after it is refrigerated!
(2) Sunflower Lecithin:
Liver-Loving Add-In (that Reduces Staleness Too!)
You’ve probably seen “lecithin” listed in the ingredients of packaged baked goods and mixes. That’s because lecithin is a superb humectant. It adds moisture to baked goods, which reduces staleness and makes for a longer shelf life.
But unlike other “additives” and preservatives, lecithin is one that is actually good for you.
In fact, as a rich source of phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) sunflower lecithin is a great way to add powerful cellular nutrition into your favorite desserts and treats.
Together these two compounds are known to:
- Benefit memory and cognition
- Reduce cortisol levels
- Reduce fat in the liver
- Promote
healthy immune function
- Promote overall cellular health
How To: Add 1 tablespoon of sunflower lecithin powder (we us a product by NOW Foods) to the preparation of Chocolate Bliss Cake and bake as usual.
Bonus: Sunflower lecithin adds a creamy mouthfeel and keeps Chocolate Bliss Cake moist longer!
(3) Collagen: Invisible Protein Booster & Wrinkle Reducer!
You’ve probably seen the explosion in collagen products over the last few years. And for good reason!
As one of the major building blocks of bones, skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments, collagen is touted for its ability to improve skin tone and texture, reduce wrinkles and ease joint pain.
And you can add it to just about anything… including Chocolate Bliss Cake!
How To: Stir in up to ¼ cup of collagen peptides into your mixing bowl with the remaining ingredients needed for Chocolate Bliss Cake. Then bake as usual.
Bonus: For every 20 gram
scoop of collagen powder, you also get an extra 2 grams of protein per serving of Chocolate Bliss Cake.
(4) Bone Broth & Whey Protein Powders: Have Your Cake… For Breakfast!
While
Chocolate Bliss Cake is already an antioxidant-rich nutritional powerhouse on its own, you can transform it into a light meal by adding high-quality protein. The result is a delicious treat that will keep you full for hours.
Our favorites are grass-fed whey protein (like Tera’s Whey or Natural Force) or Bone Broth Protein (like Ancient Nutrition).
How To: Stir 1-2 scoops of your favorite grass-fed protein into your mixing bowl with the remaining ingredients needed for Chocolate Bliss Cake. Then bake as usual.
Bonus: For every 20g scoop, you’ll get an additional 2 grams of satiating protein per serving of Chocolate
Bliss Cake. If you add 1 scoop, each serving of Chocolate Bliss cake will contain 6 grams total protein.
Upgrade Your Chocolate Cake with These Six “Superfat” Options
In addition to
adding a few sneaky superfoods into Chocolate Bliss, you can also customize the flavor and texture depending on the healthy fat you choose. Here are a few of our favorites and the results you can expect:
- Coconut Oil: This is the standard fat for making Chocolate Bliss Cake. It provides a mild coconut flavor and healthy dose of fat-burning, keto-boosting medium chain triglycerides
(MCTs)
- Grass-Fed Butter: It’s hard to beat the taste of melted Kerrygold butter in baked goods. Silky and rich butter is also the world’s best source of immune and metabolism-boosting butyric acid
- Grass-Fed Ghee: The alternative for dairy-sensitive folks who crave the taste of real butter. Use ghee to get the
taste of butter you love… without the casein you don’t
- Macadamia Nut Oil: This monounsaturated-fat rich oil will transform Chocolate Bliss Cake into a nutty-flavored delight. Try this oil in a modified version of our Chocolate Rum Cake for a delicious twist
- Avocado Oil: Another monounsaturated-rich fat, avocado oil is well-known to boost nutrient absorption and promote healthy metabolism
- Cocoa Butter: This rich and creamy fat from the cacao bean is another delicious addition. Because of its solid nature, its best to combine with
a liquid fat (like avocado oil) to prevent a waxy texture (though that quickly softens up upon heating!).
Of course, you can also try a 50/50 blend of any two of these healthy fats for delicious results!
Create Your Own Version of Superfood Chocolate Bliss
Cake!
Best of all, these superfood (and superfat) add-ins can be combined to create a unique and tasty treat with nutritional benefits.
For example, my go-to combination is:
Add Ins: 2 ounces cream cheese + 1 scoop collagen + 1 Tbsp. lecithin
Fat: 50/50
butter and avocado oil (this would be used for the “oil” called for on the package)
And we know you’ll fall in love with this dark, fudgy chocolate cake (with hidden nutritional benefits) that will keep you full for hours!
Have Your Cake… and Be Well Too!
