Dear ,
We’re no longer asking if we’re exposed to toxins.
We know we are.
The real question is: What are we doing to protect ourselves?
Because at this point, it’s not just a few sketchy ingredients slipping through the cracks.
It’s hundreds of endocrine disruptors,
inflammatory agents, and industrial byproducts—hiding in food packaging, cookware, cosmetics, soaps, water, and even “fresh” produce.
And they don’t just pass through.
They can build up.
They may
interfere with hormones, metabolism, and detox pathways.
And this hidden strain can build up faster than most people realize.
Years ago, authors Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie showed just how fast this can happen.
In Slow Death by Rubber Duck, they documented personal experiments where simple daily habits—like eating canned food or using plastic—caused thousands-of-percent increases in chemical levels in their blood… in just two days.
That was over a decade ago.
Since then, we’ve only uncovered more.
We now know that:
- Commonly eaten fish like tuna now carry elevated mercury levels, a neurotoxin linked to memory loss, low mood, and developmental problems.
- Phthalates, which can leach into food from plastic packaging and processing equipment, are known to alter hormone signaling.
- PFAS (“forever chemicals”) are found in drinking water, nonstick pans, and takeout packaging
- Triclosan, BPA, and other legacy toxins still show up in “common use”
products today
- Even organic food can be compromised—depending on how you store, heat, or prepare it.
Simple Ways to Reduce Your Toxic Load
You can’t avoid everything—but you can
take meaningful steps to lower your daily exposure:
- Choose organic foods free from biocides (pesticides, fungicides, etc)
- Go for grass-fed meat, wild fish, and organic dairy products
- Use safer cookware like cast iron or stainless
steel (learn more in Kelley’s new guide, Plate Poisons)
- Avoid canned foods, or opt for products that come from BPA-free cans (Eden Foods and Vital Choice are two brands which use BPA-free cans)
- Avoid fish known to be high in mercury (tuna, swordfish, tilefish, shark, marlin and others)
- Be
selective with personal care—look for formulas made without synthetic chemicals — like these skin-loving & nutrient-rich serums »
These small, daily choices can go a long way toward reducing your body’s toxic load.

P.S. According to a landmark survey by the Environmental Working Group, the average woman uses 12 personal care products a day, containing 168 unique chemical ingredients—many of
which are absorbed directly through the skin.
And while a single product may be considered "safe as used," this research highlights the reality of cumulative exposure—something most safety reviews still ignore.
So if you’re already choosing wild salmon over farmed, and
organic greens instead of conventional—don’t let your skincare be the thing that holds you back.
