At first glance, a bag of "healthy" chips might seem like a smarter snack choice.
Fewer ingredients you can't pronounce. Certified organic.
And potatoes — a chemically intensive crop — are always better when they're organic.
But don't be fooled.
Even the cleanest ingredients can't protect you from the cellular damage that these tasty snacks can
cause.
In fact, that irresistible crunch delivers a one-two punch against your health and vitality.
Here’s why:
Carbohydrate-rich foods (like potatoes) cooked at high temperatures create an aggressive cancer-promoting compound called acrylamide.
Oils heated beyond their flash point generate dangerous compounds known as lipid oxidation products (LOPs).
And that gives "killer crunch" a whole new meaning!
Now, I’m not saying that the occasional chip will sabotage your health. But it’s important to understand what’s happening inside your body — and the risks of making it a daily habit.
So, How Bad is Acrylamide?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies acrylamide as a probable human carcinogen.
And get this: a large order of fast-food fries or a standard bag of chips can contain 300–500 times more acrylamide than what’s allowed in a glass of water!
It gets worse:
A study in Cancer Epidemiology found that women who ate one portion of chips per day (about 40 mcg of acrylamide) had double the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer compared to women who ate less.
People with the highest acrylamide intake had a 59% higher risk of kidney cancer compared to those with the lowest exposure. And for every 10 mcg increase in
acrylamide, the risk of kidney cancer rose by 10%.
But it’s not just the carbohydrate crunch that’s concerning — it’s also the oils.
From the Frying Pan... Into the Fire
Omega-6 oils, like safflower oil, are especially unstable. When heated, they easily degrade into toxic compounds that can damage your DNA.
This damage is linked to:
Wrinkles and sagging skin
Vision loss
Sticky arterial plaque (leading to heart disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s)
And many forms of cancer
That’s why it’s so important to know what you’re really getting — even from foods that seem healthy on the surface.
You might be
